In this day and age of "wokeness", it is so easy to offend or be offended by something someone says or does but I feel that we need to know the "rest of the story" before we allow this to happen.
Case in point, I had brought a neighbor with me to Church one Sunday. At one point, I could see that she was visibly upset and asked about it. Well, she had overheard someone call a Native American church member "Chief" and was aghast. She felt it had all kinds of negative interpretations and was definitely out of place in a house of God. She stormed away before I could give her the "rest of the story".
Very few of us knew what Chief's real first name was, due to the fact that he never told anyone. He introduced himself as Chief, thought of himself as Chief and he had been called Chief for as long as he could remember. His first name was Albert. He much preferred Chief. I never questioned it. If that's what he wanted to be called , then that's what he should be called.
I bring this up because the world has changed soooo much since our clients were young. If they use a term or word or express a thought that in today's world might be considered evisneffo, remember the "rest of the story". Those things were ok when they grew up. It's ok to understand and let it go. It doesn't mean to them what it means to us today. It's ok.
