I recently read a news article entitled, “Husband Holds His Wife Of 34 Years In His Arms Close To Heart As She Struggles With Dementia”. It was a beautiful but heartbreaking story that we know all too well. A daughter’s quote stuck with me. She stated that “my mom doesn’t always remember his name but she knows she is safe with him”.

I have worked with a lot of dementia clients and families. I have seen this scenario play out numerous times. Faces light up when a loved one is near. Or relax when they feel safe. The daughter of one of my clients told me that she could tell I was one of her mom’s “safe” people by how she would relax when I was there.

I have watched a number of Youtube Videos that illustrate this. My favorite is of a daughter asking her mom, “Who am I?”. She did it in a fun, playful way while they shared some special moments. After a few attempts at names the mom replied, “I don’t remember your name but I know that you are someone I love”!!!

Remember that you are someone’s safe person even if your client doesn’t have dementia. The concept is the same. Thanks for all you do!
